Spec sheet
A spec sheet is a one-page technical summary of a product, listing dimensions, materials, performance figures, standards met and part numbers. In industrial sales it is the document a specifier or engineer uses to decide whether a product fits their application.
In practice
Spec sheets are also called cut sheets, data sheets or submittal sheets depending on the industry, and the differences are conventions rather than definitions. In construction a submittal sheet is the version sent for approval; in electronics a data sheet is usually longer and more detailed. The job is the same: give a technical buyer everything they need to rule the product in or out without contacting anyone.
The problem for most manufacturers is not that they lack spec sheets. It is that the spec sheets are the only place the information exists, and they are PDFs. A PDF is exactly right for the engineer who wants to save or share the document, and close to useless for the search that would have found it. The specifications inside are far harder for a search engine to weigh than page text, and largely invisible to the AI assistants that increasingly answer a buyer's first round of questions.
The fix is not to remove the PDF. It is to publish the same figures as real page text, with the downloadable version alongside. Companies that do this find they start ranking for very specific technical queries they never targeted, because the queries match numbers that now exist as text on a page rather than as pixels inside an attachment.
It is worth being deliberate about what a spec sheet includes for a buyer who does not already know you. Standards and certifications met, materials, tolerances, and a part number they can quote back are the fields that get a product shortlisted. Marketing language on a spec sheet is generally ignored by the people who read them.
A test that takes two minutes: search for one of your own part numbers plus a specification, in the way a specifier would. If your product does not appear but a distributor's listing of it does, that is the PDF problem, and the distributor is capturing the search your engineering work created.
