Composable commerce

Definition

Composable commerce is an approach to building ecommerce where you assemble the storefront from independent, best-of-breed services (catalog, cart, search, content, payments) connected by APIs, instead of buying a single all-in-one platform.

In practice

The traditional model is a suite: one platform does catalog, cart, checkout, content, and search, and you live within its choices. Composable commerce unbundles that. You pick the best service for each job and connect them through APIs, so you can swap search or checkout without replatforming the whole store. Gartner coined the term for exactly this shift toward modular, API-connected commerce.

The pattern that underpins it is usually described as MACH: Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native, and Headless. In practice that means small independent services exposed through APIs, run as managed cloud software, with the front end (the head) decoupled from the commerce engine, the same headless idea as a headless CMS, applied to the whole stack.

The upside is flexibility and scale: large B2B sellers with complex catalogs, multiple brands, or unusual buying flows can build exactly the experience they need and evolve it piece by piece. The downside is that composable is a build, not a purchase. It needs an engineering team to assemble and maintain, so it rewards organizations with development resources and frustrates those expecting turnkey.

For most established B2B companies the honest answer is not yet, or only in part. A packaged B2B ecommerce platform gets you further faster, and you can adopt composable pieces, a headless front end or a separate search service, where they earn their keep. It becomes compelling when your requirements genuinely outgrow what any single platform will do.

Common questions

Is composable commerce the same as headless?

Headless is one piece of it. Headless decouples the front end from the commerce engine; composable goes further and decouples the whole stack into best-of-breed services connected by APIs. All composable commerce is headless, but headless alone is not fully composable.

What is MACH architecture?

MACH stands for Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native, and Headless: the technical principles behind composable commerce, meaning independent services exposed through APIs, run as managed cloud software, with a decoupled front end.

Is composable commerce right for my B2B company?

It fits large sellers with complex needs and an engineering team to assemble and maintain the stack. Most established B2B companies are better served starting with a packaged platform and adopting composable pieces where they clearly pay off.
